International Baccalaureate® Primary Years Programme
“Education is not preparation for life; Education is life itself.” — John Dewey
The International Baccalaureate® Primary Years Programme is designed to cultivate internationally minded individuals who embody specific characteristics.
At its heart, the PYP delivers a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based, and student-centered education, emphasizing responsible action. This framework empowers students to learn not just within traditional subjects, but also across and beyond them. The goal is to achieve genuine conceptual inquiry-based learning that is engaging, significant, challenging, and directly relevant to PYP students. Furthermore, the program fosters an international perspective, actively acknowledging and celebrating the wide range of student experiences and backgrounds.
While the Homeroom Facilitator guides the core curriculum, specialist teachers enrich the student experience by teaching art, music, languages, library skills, and physical education. Crucially, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is woven seamlessly into every facet of the curriculum.
IB Learner Profile
A school utilizing the Primary Years Programme (PYP) aims to cultivate students into internationally minded individuals who embody the full spectrum of the IB Learner Profile. These essential qualities include being: Inquirers, Thinkers, Principled, Communicators, Knowledgeable, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.
The International Baccalaureate® Learner Profile outlines a comprehensive set of human capacities and responsibilities designed to promote growth that extends far beyond mere academic achievement.
The Pillars of the PYP Curriculum Framework
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum is structured upon a transdisciplinary model that permeates its three fundamental pillars: the learner, learning and teaching, and the learning community.
The Learner: This pillar articulates the desired developmental outcomes for each student, encompassing both individual attainment and the self-directed goals they pursue. Essentially, it addresses the core question: What constitutes meaningful learning?
Learning and Teaching: This component elucidates the distinctive pedagogical features that characterize the PYP. It systematically addresses the optimal methods for scaffolding and supporting student growth, thereby answering the query: How can we best facilitate the learning process?
The Learning Community: This pillar underscores the critical role of the collective environment, highlighting the significance of the social and communal outcomes of education. It defines the crucial function that IB communities perform in realizing these objectives, responding to the question: Who actively participates in and enables learning and teaching?
